Lionel “Rusty” Bernstein, a leader of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, died in Oxford, England, on June 23 at 82. A leading member of South Africa’s Communist Party, Bernstein was a prolific political writer who was responsible for much of the material issued by the nation’s liberation movement in exile before the 1990s.
