Dr. Hans Luther, German ambassador to the United States, sailed for the homeland early yesterday aboard the North German Lloyd liner Europa, it was learned. Prior to his departure reports were current that the ambassador was returning to the Reich to discuss the American viewpoint on the current German debt situation. These were confirmed in Washington after Luther had sailed.
Ship news reporters failed in their hunt for the ambassador, who concealed himself until all except passengers and crew had gone ashore. His name did not appear on the sailing list, and as far as could be learned from ship’s officers the ambassador was not aboard. With both the ship and ambassador well out at sea yesterday, the office of the North German Lloyd admitted Luther had gone home.
It is understood he will remain in Germany for two or three weeks, during which time he will confer with Berlin bigwigs on the moratorium. The embassy at Washington has admitted that Luther will report on the American reaction and the tariff program, about which Luther learned on Monday during conversations with Under-Secretary of State William Phillips.
