Deputy Dr. Trifu, one of the Cuzist members of Parliament, asked the Minister of the Interior, M. Argetoianu, at the last sitting of the Chamber, why the authorities had prohibited a Cuzist Congress that had been arranged in Buzeu.
At the present time of distress, the Minister replied, the Government can permit only such meetings to be held which are called by political parties “which have shown that they act with a feeling of responsibility towards the country”.
The Prime Minister, Professor Jorga, has followed up the Minister’s statement by publishing a manifesto on behalf of the Government to all Roumanians, calling upon the population not to do anything which would imperil law and order in the country.
Jewish quarters take the view that the Government is thinking chiefly of preventing antisemitic manifestations on December 10th., the anniversary of the antisemitic student movement in Roumania, and of the numerus clausus agitation.
It is expected that the Government will also prohibit the Congress of the Iron Guard Organisation which has been arranged to take place on December 15th. in Oradeo Mare. The Congress had been arranged for an earlier date, but was prohibited by the authorities, who afterwards, however, decided to permit it to be held on December 15th. The Congress was specially fixed for this date to coincide with the revision of the trial of the prisoners arrested in connection with the Borsha disturbances in the summer of 1930.
