Malcolm MacDonald, son of the late Ramsay MacDonald, was named Secretary of State for the Colonies today, succeeding William G.A. Ormsby-Gore, who recently became Lord Harlech with the death of his father. Mr. MacDonald served as Colonial Secretary from June to November, 1935, when he was shifted to the post of Secretary of State for the Dominions and replaced by J.H. Thomas. Mr. Ormsby-Gore followed Mr. Thomas in May, 1936.
At a dinner of the Anglo-Palestine Club in October, 1935, Mr. MacDonald, then Colonial Secretary, advised Zionist cooperation with the Arabs, declaring: “You must create conditions there that will make the Arab work with you. There’s room for both, and there you will live side by side.”
