Many Jewish-owned stores were among the targets of looting and arson during the three days of racial violence in Newark, a survey here indicated today as normal conditions returned.
The Jewish-owned enterprises, which included clothing, liquor, food and appliance stores, were apparently looted because they belonged to whites. anti-Semitic shouts by Negro rioters, reported in a number of such disorders in cities last year, were not heard in the Newark rioting. The rioters attacked white-owned enterprises generally while leaving untouched Negro businesses which bore the inscription “Soul Brother” to indicate to the rioters that they were Negro stores.
Most of the stores which were looted have been in the Central Ward, the major Negro area of Newark, for many years, dating back to the time when the area was Jewish.
