Israeli officials declared here today that Nasser’s offer to negotiate a settlement with Israel, as reported in the British and American press, is a “worthless smokescreen.” They described Israel’s position as unchanged regarding the need for a solution of the dispute with the Arab states only through direct talks. “If Egypt is willing to talk.” one high official said, “our representatives will meet with his without any pre-conditions.” Nasser’s “smokescreen.” another official said, “is an effort to appear reasonable while, in fact, he offers no compromise whatever.”
