New Jersey’s tangled complex state and local Sunday closing laws was some what clarified today by a State Supreme Court ruling that such a ban is legal under home-rule legislation.

The high court, which last week ruled a state-wide Sunday law void, ruled unanimously yesterday that a Paramus ordinance banning the sale of some items on Sunday was valid. The Paramus ordinance, adopted in 1957, bans most non-religious or noncharitable Sunday activity but exempts a wide range of activities from the ban, including sports events.

Three highway discount stores, some of which have been forcibly closed by Paramus police, brought suit to have the local law declared invalid. The plaintiffs argued they were denied equal protection of law because nearby municipalities permitted virtually unrestricted Sunday sales.
