More than $20,000,000 has been collected by the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York to date in its 1951 campaign, it was announced last night by Monroe Goldwater, president of the New York U.J.A., at a dinner tendered in honor of U.S. Attorney General J. Howard McGrath. The dinner was arranged by the lawyers’ division of the U.J.A.
Addressing the 350 guests, the Attorney General said: “The democratic nation of Western Europe are being immeasurable bolstered by the U.J.A. programs which set thousands of their Jewish citizens, who suffered so terribly under the Nazis, back on the road to economic self-support. Similarly, here in the United States, the United Jewish Appeal gives Jewish displaced persons–victims of war and persecution–the precious chance to become free and productive citizens again and, in so doing, strengthens the social and economic fabric of our nation.”
