A program of public celebrations, beginning October 26 and continuing for a week, has been arranged by the officers of the New York Y. M. H. A. for the formal dedication of its new building, it was announced yesterday by Joseph M. Proskauer, president of the association.
The new building is, former Justice Proskauer said, the largest and most complete Jewish community center in the United States. It was erected at a cost of $2,500,000, the largest part of which was raised in a building fund campaign in 1927. Among the largest individual gifts was one of $200,000 by Henry Kaufman, of Pittsburgh, for the construction of the “Theresa Kaufman Auditorium,” which is the main assembly hall of the building and is named in honor of the memory of the donor’s wife. Other large contributions were $100,000 from Felix M. Warburg, a former president of the organization, and $50,000 from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. These gifts were later supplemented by an award of $175,000 from the estate of the late Conrad Hubert.
The New York Y. M. H. A. is the pioneer organization of its kind the world over. It was organized in 1874 and the present building is its sixth, two of which were presented by the late Jacob H. Schiff, who was the donor of the building on the same site, which the new edifice has replaced.
