Factional differences brought the convention of the Order Sons of Zion to a high pitch of excitement yesterday when election of officers took place. A new personnel, with two exceptions, will lead the organization next year. Five officers, all New Yorkers, were chosen unanimously: Max Perlman, Nasi; Samuel Markiewich, Sgan Rishon; David Podolsky, treasurer; Samuel Weinstein, counsellor; Dr. Solomon Neumann, chief medical examiner.
Samuel Markiewich was chosen Egan Rishon after Louis Weiss and Louis Hochberg. both of Newark, withdrew as candidates in the interest of harmony. Hochberg withdrew with the proviso that neither Weiss nor S. L. Diener also of Newark, be named to the executive committee. Weiss, who was chairman of convention committee, asserted his withdrawal was due to the belief that he would be the only New-ark candidate for the post of Sgan Rishon.
Choice of Sgan Sheini and Maskir or secretary, and ten members of Executive was determined by closed ballot. Louis Rimsky, New York, was chosen Sgan Sheini and Harry Pine, Newark lawyer, Maskir. The following. all from New York, were elected to the executive committee: H. Danelson. A. Arkin, H. J. Kahn, M. Danzis, Leo Wilson. H. J. Abramson, Dr. Schwartzberg. H. Abramawitz, M. Herbst and B. Shelvin. M. J. Altshul, New York, headed the election board.
The question concerning the Judea Insurance Company did not figure openly in yesterday’s sessions. Late last night, however, delegates held a session running well past midnight, at which complaints against the company were aired. It was asserted that the Judea, which was organized by the Order, has become a private enterprise. over which the Order has no control, and it was urged that control over the company be regained in order that the interests of Palestine may be safe-guarded. It is understood that a committee of representative members has been appointed to adjudicate this matter.
The following resolution concerning the present Zionist situation was unanimously adopted: “Resolved that the Order Sons of Zion in convention assembled deplores the methods employed in the controversy now raging between the so-called ‘opposition’ and the present administration of the Zionist Organization of America. We believe that such methods are not productive of any good; and have a tendency of disseminating rancor, strife, dissatisfaction and ultimate distrust in the entire Zionist movement. The delegates assembled express their hope and desire that at the coming convention of the Z. O. A. at Pittsburgh, some way may be found by which all factions and forces may be united to work in harmony for the common cause of Zionism.”
A recommendation that the camps admit members who do not desire insurance; a recommendation that there be special committees on cultural work to sponsor Jewish activities among the youth and that the Order assume only the business management and should not interfere in the artistic program and management of the Bezalel Art school was referred to the incoming administration.
A resolution deploring the alleged flogging of prisoners in Palestine jails was adopted to be brought before the Zionist convention in Pittsburgh.
CORRECTION
An error occurred in the report of the luncheon to be given to Dr. Wise and Louis Lipsky following the Avukah convention to be held in Pittsburgh, Pa. It was erroneously stated that the luncheon would be given at the William Penn Hotel, New York City instead of Pittsburgh.
Justine Wise Tulin, daughter of Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, was one of the thirteen members of the 1928 class of Yala Law School, who have been elected to membership in the Order of the Coif, the national legal honor society for students in law.
The cornerstone for the recreation building of Temple Emann-El, Port Richmond, S. I., was laid Sunday. Borough President John A. Lynch, Judge J. Harry Tiernan, Dr. George P. Mord and Rabbi I. A. Millner were the speakers at the exercises. The building is being erected at a cost of $125,000 to house the recreational and social aotivities of the congregation.
