A demand that all forms of religious activity and religious education be halted in the public schools in the United States was made here today in a resolution adopted by 700 delegates attending the 37th annual national convention of the women’s branch of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America.
In the resolution, the women reaffirmed their position, which holds that sectarian programs in public schools constitute a violation of the constitutional principle calling for separation of church and state.
Another resolution denounced the United Arab Republic blockade of the Suez Canal against Israeli shipping as “an act in defiance of international covenants.” This resolution called on the President and the State Department to do “all in their power to end the blockade.”
A related resolution condemned discrimination practiced by Arab states against American citizens, including those in the United States armed forces, and urged prompt action by the Washington Administration to end such discrimination against any American of whatever race or religion. The convention elected Mrs. Emanuel Lazar, of Brooklyn, as national president.
