Otto Bauer, noted Austrian Socialist leader and former Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs died here today at the age of 57. His death was attributed to heart failure. Bauer went into exile after the late Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss suppressed the Socialists in Vienna in the so-called “Socialist Uprising” of February, 1934. He had resided since then in a modest furnished apartment in Paris. The Dollfuss regime deprived him of Austrian citizenship after he left the country.
One of his last public appearances was at the recent national congress of the French Socialist Party at Royan where he was accorded a place of honor among prominent exiled Socialists attending the meeting. Dr. Bauer was born in 1881 and educated at the University of Vienna. He was a Lieutenant in the Austrian army at the outbreak of the war and was made prisoner in 1915 by the Russians. Returning to Austria in 1917 he became attached to the War Office staff.
