Peres off to Britain for Knighthood


Israeli President Shimon Peres will be knighted and receive an honorary degree during an official visit to Britain.

Peres is scheduled to arrive in Britain Monday night at the invitation of the British government, to mark 60 years of relations between the two countries.

During the three-day visit he will be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, receive an honorary degree from Kings College, address both houses of parliament and give a speech at Oxford University.

In addition to meeting with the Queen, Peres will meet Prince Charles, Prime Minister Gordon Brown — who will also host a dinner in his honor, Foreign Secretary David Miliband, and the head of the opposition, David Cameron.

In his meetings Peres is expected to discuss strengthening bilateral relations, as well as cooperation between the two countries in the political, security and economic realms. Also on his agenda will be the the British-led attempts to boycott imported Israeli goods, the Iranian nuclear program, the peace process with the Palestinians and contacts with Syria.

Peres is also slated to meet with the leaders of the British media and members of the Jewish community.
