“By means of appeals to race, class and national hatred and antipathies, totalitarian states have been able to develop extraordinarily efficient party organizations and to whip up mass emotion in support of party policies,” declared Professor Calvin B. Hoover of Duke University, speaking on “Laissez Faire and Dictatorships,” in his Phi Beta Kappa oration yesterday at the New York Delta’s public ceremonies in Philosophy Hall, Columbia University.

Fifteen Jewish students were among the thirty-five Columbia College seniors inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in the trustees’ room of the library yesterday afternoon.
