The Allied Jewish Appeal closed its 1966 campaign here yesterday with an announcement that $4,637,760 has been raised. The campaign, conducted by the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Greater Philadelphia, had sought a minimum of $4,621,500.

The announcement of the goal-eclipsing results was made by Sylvan M. Cohen, general chairman of the campaign. “The Jewish community of Philadelphia can well be proud of what it has done in this campaign for its brethren,” he told the 300 community and campaign leaders at a dinner at the Warwick Hotel. “What has been accomplished and the spirit that motivated it are in the finest traditions of our faith.”

Frank L. Newburger, Jr., Federation president, announced that the 1967 campaign will be headed by Raymond G. Perelman, who served as chairman of the advance gifts division in the drive just completed. In accepting the post of 1967 general chairman, Mr. Perelman stated that the community “has placed great faith in me. I promise that I will do everything that I can in carrying out the heavy duties that are ahead.”

Mr. Newburger, in his address, declared: “I think this campaign will long be remembered. It will be remembered not only because it more than achieved its goal, but also for the good that the funds will bring to those in need. I think it will be remembered also because of the almost awesome extra measure of devotion and dedication given to it by its general chairman and by all those who worked at his side.”

Lauding the volunteer campaigners, Federation executive director Donald B. Hurwitz declared: “Only men and women of unlimited devotion and conviction can maintain a peak of activity over a period of many months for any cause. During most of the past year the men and women who comprise the active participants in the AJA have maintained a remarkable pace which has resulted in the exciting reports which spell success not only for the campaign, but for all of the work which it makes possible.”
