A plan to bring at least 1, 500 Jewish students from abroad to Israel every year, to pursue their studies in Israel and to serve as a sort of “peace corps” in this country, was decided upon here today at a meeting between Prime Minister Levi Eshkol and Foreign Minister Abba Eban with officials of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Haim Yahil, director of the Center for Cultural Relations With World Jewry, was named as head of the new program. Currently, only about 500 Jewish students come-here each year from foreign countries. Under the new plan, the students will not only continue their college studies in Israel but will serve, at the same time, as teachers and social workers in areas inhabited largely by underprivileged.
