Efforts continued here this week to help the victims of the floods caused last month by tropical storm Agnes. Residents of the Home for the Jewish Aged of Philadelphia–men and women in the 70s, 80s and 90s–raised $100 for the Pennsylvania victims of the deluge. The 350 men and women of the home, most of whom are themselves on Old Age Assistance raised the money out of their meager pocket savings in a one-day campaign. The gift was forwarded to the Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter for flood relief work.
Severely hit by the floods was Cong. Ohav Zedek (Orthodox) of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. whose Hebrew school was washed out. Seven Torah scrolls damaged by water will be buried as prescribed by Jewish law. The congregation, headed by Rabbi Jerome Kerzner, has set up the Hebrew Institute Flood Disaster Fund and is seeking aid. Meanwhile, Dr. Herbert Seltzer, Director of the Daughters of Jacob Geriatric Center in the Bronx, reiterated his institution’s offer to supply Torahs to any flood-stricken synagogue that requested them.
