Mayoress Felisa Rincon de Gautier of San Juan and Jose Benitez, another leading Catholic citizen of this city, have been decorated by Reuven Dafni, Israel Consul in New York, with Guardian of Israel awards on behalf of the Israel Bond Organization in recognition of their efforts in selling Israel bonds in Puerto Rico.
More than 150 Jewish residents of San Juan attended the ceremony at City Hall, during which the Mayoress presented the keys to the city to the Israel Consul. Immediately afterwards, another $16,000 in bonds were purchased. Dona Felisa and Sr. Benitez, chairman of the Puerto Rican Social Action Committee, have pressed the sale Israel bonds here and have helped to sell more than $100,000 worth in Puerto Rico. Consul Dafni made a special trip from New York to San Juan to present the awards to them.
