The demand for the repeal of the “national origins” clause of the Immigration Au of 1924 is being renewed here. A committee for the elinunation of this legilation has established headquarters and will urge action at the coming session of Congress.
The purpose of this committee, it was explained, is to arouse the American people to the “infamy” of the “restrictive and discriminatory legislation contained in the new Immigration Law by which the number of immigrants that may annualy come from Great Britain will exceed the total number that will be permitted to come from all the other nations of Europe.” These nations include Southern Ireland, Germany, Italy, the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Poland and the Balkan countries.
“It was due to the activity of this committee.” it was added. “that a postponement of the law which was scheduled to go into effect on July 1, 1927, was secured.”
Behind this movement as directors are Judge Sweeney, National President of the Ancient Order of Hiber?ians: Former Congressman Michael Donohoe of Philadelphia, past National President of the A. O. H? Dr. Edward F. MtSweeney of the American Irish Historical Society and prominent authority on immigration.
A statement for the committee organized to defeat this legislation said:
“The dara for the new quotas under the ‘national origins’ feature of the Limmigration Law of 1924 have been supplied by agents of the Carnegie Foundation. The millions of the late Mr. Carnegie are being expended for the accomplishment of his designs, while his agent, in the person of Senator David A Reed of Pennsylvaniz, is working skilfully and unceasingly to speed the enactment of what has been said by some to be the most barefaced piece of racial and religious big? in Federal legislation that has ever been tried to be put over on the American people.”
This law if not repealed before April I next, will go into effect on the following July 1.
