The Rumanian Government regards the Jewish emigration problem as a question which must be solved by peaceful, not violent means, Foreign Minister Gregoire Gafencu declared today in an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent.
Only Jews residing in the country illegally or having an “uncertain existence” will be obliged to leave the country, the Foreign Minister said. Jews settled in Rumania for many years, attached to the country by patriotic connections similar to those of Rumanians, will not be affected, he declared.
It is in the interest of the illegal residents to establish themselves in some colonial territory and thus end their present wanderings, Mr. Gafencu stated. Rumania, together with interested countries, will examine the question of “superfluous Jews,” he declared.
Commenting on reports that the Government desired the emigration of 150,000 Jews in three years, the Foreign Minister said that such a number was impracticable and illusory and that, while emigration was a necessity for Rumania, it would reach no such proportions.
