Seminar on Violence, Defense in Jewish History Scheduled by Tel Aviv U

The 20th century has witnessed a general upsurge of violence in many areas of the world. For the fourth time in 25 years Israel has been engaged in violent confrontation with the Arab nations. To analyze these phenomena, their background and their manifestations, the Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies at Tel Aviv University will sponsor a seminar on the issue of violence and defense in Jewish history and contemporary life.

The seminar will be held at Tel Aviv University from Aug. 18-Sept. 25, it was announced here by the American Friends of Tel Aviv University. Prof. Salo W. Baron will serve as chairman of the seminar. Distinguished scholars and lecturers from the United States, Europe and Israel will join him on the faculty conducting the seminar. In addition to formal lectures and discussions a series of panel conferences revolving around the theme of the seminar in its various aspects, will be held with the participation of leading figures in Israel.

Dr. George S. Wise, Chancellor of Tel Aviv University, and Mrs. Wise, are offering a number of grants of $1500 each, covering the cost of travel, participation, lodging and tours in Israel, to deserving candidates. Application is open to holders of academic degrees in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Social Work between the ages of 22 and 35. This seminar will also mark the official inauguration of the Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies at Tel Aviv University and will be the first of the annual seminars which will be conducted under the auspices of the Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies. Dr. Marnin Feinstein is the coordinator of the seminar.
