Report of the Senate immigration Committee on the amended Wagner-Rogers bill for admission of 20,000 refugee children from Germany, scheduled for submission to the Senate today, was again delayed. Senator King is holding the report up because the amendment, providing that the 20,000 be deducted from the present German quota, is so objectionable to Senator Wagner.
Senator Wagner, meanwhile, is trying to get the committee to reconsider its decision and to insert a proposal by Representative William R. Poage (Dem. Tex.) which would make every refugee count against the quota when he becomes of age but not before. This, Senator Wagner said, would not work a hardship on adults who are now trying to leave Germany.
Senator Wagner expressed certainty that the Reynolds measure calling for shutdown of immigration for five years, which was reported to the Senate today, could not pass. The House Immigration Committee was scheduled to meet today on the Wagner-Rogers measure, but the committee said a transcript of the hearings was not ready so it deferred action.
Senator Reynolds, meanwhile, speaking during the debate on the Social Security bill, declared that the “best social security we can provide is to give American jobs to American citizens.” To do this, he added, the United States must shut its gates to immigrants.
