Senator Jacob K. Javits of New York declared tonight that “The stage is set for a vigorous fight at this session of Congress to cut off aid to the United Arab Republic from the United States Foreign Aid Program if President Nasser insists on diverting Egypt’s own resources to buy arms from the Communist bloc by using American food aid to fill in the gap.”
Speaking at a dinner at the Commodore Hotel, where he received the annual Israel Bond Fraternal Award, Senator Javits said: “Our real objective must be improvement of the unbelievably bad situation in the health, housing and nutrition for the rank and file people of Egypt. That is the real meaning of friendship. President Nasser must be brought face to face with the catastrophic effect of his continued insistence on escalating the arms race in the Middle East, on employing former Nazi scientists in weapons manufacture and on fomenting subversion and armed aggression against other Arab states in the area, while persisting in implacable hostility against Israel.”
The New York Senator warned that “with the best will in the world, our nation cannot tolerate this kind of frustration of its objectives for peace throughout the world by the use of its own aid against other nations that similarly need it. I believe that it is very likely that a stop will be put to this activity by President Nasser if the United States turns its face against it. ” The dinner, sponsored by the Fraternal Division of State of Israel Bonds, was attended by 500 representatives of 3, 000 Jewish fraternal organizations and resulted in the sale of more than $500, 000 worth of Israel bonds.
