American agitators for Sunday “blue laws” should profit from the example set by Sir Herbert Samuel, High Commissioner for Palestine, the Brooklyn Eagle declares in an editorial today.
Commenting on the report from Jerusalem carried by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the editorial relates how Sir Herbert was approached by a delegation of Jews who wanted Samuel “to give validity to the observance of the Sabbath.”
“Public opinion and moral influence will do more to bring about real observance of the Saturday day of rest than would the passage of laws which would be difficult of enforcement,” Sir Herbert replied, “Personally, ” the High Commissioner continued, he would “set an example of Sabbath observance.”
There is a lesson here, the editorial declares, “for those who are always urging laws and more laws to safeguard Christian Sunday in America.” These agitators, it argues “are sincere enough, earnest enough, only lacking in comprehension and appreciation of the point of view of those who disagree with them.”
