Sophie Ruskay Dead at 95

Sophie Ruskay, a descendant of settlers who helped shape Jewish life in New York City and who wrote about Jewish life on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, died Monday in a nursing home here at the age of 95. Mrs. Ruskay’s mother was Fannie Unterberg Liebowitz, whose family helped found the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Esther Ruskay, mother of Mrs. Ruskay’s late husband, Cecil, was a founder of the National Council of Jewish Women. Sophie Ruskay authored, among others, “Horsecars and Cobblestones.”
