The Soviet Union has carried out the execution of two Jewish citizens in the current campaign to use Soviet Jews as horrible examples of widespread speculation in Soviet Russia, according to a report in a provincial Soviet newspaper which arrived in New York today.
The newspaper, Zarya Vostoka, published in the Georgian city of Tibilisi, reported that Mordekh Abramovitch Kakiashvili and A.F. Steimanov had been executed for alleged economic offenses. The Soviet press has widely reported in recent months trials and death sentences for speculators in which Jewish names have been conspicuously highlighted.
(“Sovietskaya Kirgizia,” a daily newspaper published in the Soviet Republic of Kirgizia, reported today that 18 Jews were among 44 defendants charged with corruption and “theft of public property” whose trial opened this week in the city of Frunze. The Soviet newspaper said that “everything started with a group of looters named Goldman, Nathanson and Singer.”)
