Permission to import raw materials duty-free for individuals the society has set up in industry, has been granted by the Russian Soviet to the Ort, the Society for the Promotion of Agricultural and Technical Trades among the Jews of Eastern Europe, the American Ort announced. The same mail brought the first 21 permits issued by the Russian government to persons recommended by the Ort, allowing them to receive such goods, and authorizing the Ort Tool Supply Company of New York to send them.
The Ort Tool Supply Company, Roman S. Weller, secretary, stated yesterday, will make shipments of thread, cotton, rubber, tin, and other raw materials, and will distribute them from the Ort warehouses in Russia as fast as they receive payment or promise of payment from relatives here.
This organization is the agency through which American residents are enabled to send machines to destitute relatives abroad. It is a credit corporation and is financed by funds of the Ort.
The Ort Campaign for Industrial Reconstruction, under the national chairmanship fo Howard S. Cullman, is now raising $1,000,000 for maintenance of these agencies for the rehabilitation of impoverished Jews abroad. A contribution of $5,000 from Col. Michael Friedsam was announced.
Contributions amounting to $20,000 were presented to the Ort, the society for the promotion of Technical and Agricultural Trades among the Jews of Eastern Europe, by the women’s committee of the Ort Campaign for Industrial Reconstruction yesterday afternoon at a tea in the home of Mrs. Henry Zuckerman, 135 Central Park West, New York. The gifts included a donation of $5,000 from Mrs. Jacob Schiff.
