Premier Paul-Henri Spaak, pleading for Belgium’s return to true democracy instead of the “caricature” of democratic Government he said has held sway in recent years, won a convincing vote of confidence for his new cabinet tonight in its first test before the Chamber of Deputies.
Spaak’s own Socialist followers and their Liberal and Catholic allies in the majority coalition gave the Government 132 votes, against 38 cast by the Opposition. Fifteen deputies abstained. Taking the floor again today to enlarge on the initial ministerial declaration he read when the Cabinet was presented before both houses of Parliament Tuesday, the Premier repudiated class warfare.
