In response to a call for acceleration by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, the Lubavitch Youth Organization had 23 Succah Mobiles covering the New York Metropolitan area, it was announced by Rabbi Shmuel Butman, youth organization director. The portable Succahs, built on flatbed trucks, operated during the days of Chol Hamoed Succoth–the intervening days of the Succoth festival.
During these days the succah mobiles visited hospitals, nursing homes, colleges, youth groups and street comers to afford people the opportunity to enter the succah, make the blessings over the esrog and lulav and partake in the refreshments served.
The newest addition to the Succah campaign was a stationary succah, built for the first time, at the Dag Hammerskjold Plaza, 200 feet from the United Nations. The Succah gave the Jews who work in that area a place to eat during the holiday, in addition to giving passersby and visitors to the area a chance to make the blessings over the esrog and lulav.
