Senator Edward Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, was presented today with the Peace Award of the Synagogue Council of America, in a ceremony in his Senate office here. He accepted the award on behalf of the Kennedy family.
The award, formally known as the Judaism and Peace Award, was established in 1960 and was first presented to President Eisenhower. President Kennedy had been the candidate of the SCA for the award for 1964 before his tragic death. The award will henceforth be known as the John F. Kennedy Peace Award of the Synagogue Council of America.
In making the presentation, Rabbi Uri Miller, SCA president, cited the many achievements of the late President as he worked for a world of peace and order. The Award is an original bronze sculpture of Isaiah “Beating Sword into Plowshares,” created by the artist Butinsky. The Hebrew word “Shalom” and its English translation are engraved on the statuette.
