Syria said Israel has yet to give a clear commitment to resume peace talks. Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa made the comments at a joint news conference in Damascus with his Norwegian counterpart, Jozias Van Aartsen. Both Syria and Israel have indicated in recent months that they are ready to resume peace negotiations that broke off in 1996.
