The Supreme Muslim Council called on Muslims in Nazareth not to build a mosque opposite the Church of the Annunciation in order to avoid escalating a conflict between Christians and Muslims. The Jerusalem-based council, which is responsible for Islamic holy sites, also condemned the Israeli government for allowing construction of the mosque. Church leaders plan to close Christian sites in Israel on Monday and Tuesday to protest a cornerstone-laying ceremony for the mosque.
