Yugoslavia is not inclined to share Egypt’s stand on Israel, it was reported here today from Belgrade in connection with the current visit of Egyptian President Nasser to Yugoslavia and his talks with Marshal Tito.
The report, which appeared in the Daily Telegraph here, reveals at the same time that Arieh Levavi; Israeli Minister to Belgrade, was originally invited to attend the reception given by Tito for Col. Nasser but the invitation was withdrawn, after discussion and apologies at the last minute, “in order to avoid embarrassment.”
Other reports received here today reveal that Mr. Levavi, acting on instructions from the Israel Government, submitted a memorandum to the Yugoslav Foreign Ministry expressing Israel’s views on the tension in the Middle East. The memorandum emphasized that Col. Nasser constantly refuses to participate in direct negotiations with Israel leading to peace talks, and that he has publicly threatened Israel with annihilation.
It is understood that the Israeli memorandum did not ask Marshal Tito to mediate the Arab-Israeli dispute, but asked him for help in arranging direct face-to-face talks with the leaders of the Arab states.
