Turkey “desires a settlement of the Palestine problem in accordance with the United Nations resolution,” Premier Menderes told Parliament last night in presenting his new Government’s program.
The failure to solve the dispute with justice is the main reason for the present Middle East troubles, he asserted, adding that the present conflicts were a manifestation of the Ease-West struggle.
Citing the recent Turkish-Syrian crises as an example, the Premier told the National Assembly that Turkey had “brotherly feelings” toward all Arab countries, including Syria, and that it was Turkey’s “cherished wish” that the Arab world would achieve independence.
Opposition leader Ismet Inonu, however, told the deputies that Turkey must not “take sides” in the Arab-Israel conflict or in inter-Arabic struggles. He insisted that Turkey’s position in these matters was “delicate.” He also criticized the Baghdad Pact.
