The Turkish Government notified the Grand Rabbinate today that the Rabbinate’s board of trustees will again be allowed to administer all Jewish communal lands, other properties and funds.
A year ago, the authorities dissolved the Grand Rabbinate, after new elections had been held in the Jewish community for members of the Rabbinate’s board. The authorities had sought to decentralize control over the various Jewish institutions and assets in Turkey. The Grand Rabbinate, representative body of Turkish Jewry, complained that the decentralization would complicate the administration of Jewish communal affairs and assets.
The new order, restoring authority in the Grand Rabbinate, was greeted by the Jewish community today with great satisfaction.
