U.S. evangelical Christians wrote an open letter to President Bush supporting a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“We affirm your clear call for a two-state solution,” the authors wrote in a letter published in Sunday’s New York Times. “We also write to correct a serious misperception among some people including some U.S. policymakers that all American evangelicals are opposed to a two-state solution and creation of a new Palestinian state that includes the vast majority of the West Bank. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

More than 30 Christian seminary presidents, clergymen and organizational leaders signed the letter. They said they hoped Bush would be emboldened to seek a final-status agreement between Israel and the Palestinians knowing he has evangelical support.

The letter urged the Bush administration not to “grow weary” in its attempt to negotiate a “lasting peace” in the region.
