Jews in the United States contributed more than 73 percent of a total of over $125,000,000 spent in Palestine during 1946 and 1947 for immigration and national development, Dr. Israel Goldstein, United Palestine Appeal national chairman declared here over the week-end. He stated that the “unprecedented needs of the current year, when Israel is confronted with the supreme reversibility of resettling 75,000 destitute immigrants including 24,000 orphaned children,” will involve an expenditure of more than $100,000,000 for Immigration alone.
Dr. Goldstein said that the total budget of the U.P.A. agencies, in addition to immigration–covering agricultural and urban development, land acquisition, housing and similar projects–will amount to $283,000,000 in 1948. At least half this sum will be provided by American Jewry through the U.J.A. $250,000,000 nation-wide campaign and the balance will have to be raised by campaigns in other countries as well as in Israel itself, and from other sources.
He disclosed that private capital totaling $1,000,000 was invested in 88 Jewish-owned companies in Palestine during December, 1947, and January, 1948. The new enterprises will produce leather goods, textiles, tools, machinery, bakelite protects fountain pens and canned foods.
