Before a capacity audience of 3,000, the Sabbath Eve liturgy written by Jacob Weinberg, of New York, was presented here last night in concert form at Berlin’s largest Jewish place of worship, the Oranienburgerstrasse Synagogue.
The performance, under the baton of Chemia Vinavar met with an ovation. The work comprises twelve different musical compositions, all based on the prayers recited during the Sabbath Eve religious service.
Mr. Weinberg, who has lived in the United States during the last nine years, composed the opera, “Pioneers,” which had its premiers at Mecca Temple in New York in 1934. Eight years earlier he had won a $1,000 prize in a musical competition sponsored by the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Born in Odessa in 1879, Mr. Weinberg played a prominent role in the Russian musical world. Before coming to the United States, he lived in Palestine six years.
