The formal establishment of a Hungarian Committee of the World Jewish Congress in Budapest during a visit there of Dr. G. M. Riegner, WJC representative, was announced in an official communique from the Central Board of Hungarian Jews received here today.
Heading the Hungarian affiliate of the World Jewish Congress is Dr. Paul Weinstein, a noted physician and professor at the University of Budapest. Other members of the committee are well-known Jewish writers, newspapermen, scientists, artists and religious leaders.
The inaugural session of the committee, which was followed by a dinner attended by Hungarian Government leaders, was held September 22, the announcement said. Andreas Sos, president of the Central Board of Hungarian Jews, told the meeting that Hungarian Jewish Association with the World Jewish Congress emphasized freedom of religion and gave Hungarian Jewry an opportunity to develop an intense religious and cultural life.
Dr. Riegner, who also spoke at the founding meeting, stressed that the association of Hungarian Jewry was an important contribution to the World Jewish Congress as a comprehensive organization of Jews throughout the world. Dr. Imre Benoschofsky, Chief Rabbi of Budapest, expressed the community’s thanks to the WJC representatives who had come to Hungary.
Among the government leaders at the gala dinner marking the establishment of the new unit were Imre Miklos, deputy head of the Office of Church Affairs, and Paul Veress, a departmental chief in the office.
