The World Zionist Actions Committee voted today, 53 to 47, to give membership to the Herut party on the Jewish Agency executive.
The vote was preceded by a day of debate and negotiations in the Actions Committee’s steering committee. Representatives of Israel’s three labor parties–Mapai, Mapam and Achdut Avodah–declared in a statement to the plenary that they were opposed to Herut membership.
They contended that the composition of the Jewish Agency executive was the outcome of an understanding between the coalition parties at the last Zionist Congress which should not be upset now. However, it was clear that the labor parties had dropped threats to resign from the executive if Herut was given membership.
