Chief Rabbi Haim Korsia called the fact that the far-right candidate won 34 percent of the vote a “cry of despair and anger” that must be taken seriously.
The result, obtained from a vote that had the lowest turnout since 1969, marks the best showing ever for the far-right National Front party, which Jewish and Muslim faith leaders flagged as a danger to democracy.
