The position of the Jews is extremely grave, the Hicem (Hias – Ica – Emigdirekt) headquarters here are informed by the “Centro Israelita de Cuba”.

The only industry controlled by Jewish manufacturers till now, the report says, was shoe-manufacturing, but a few weeks ago four of the manufacturers had to close down, and a great number of Jewish workers are unemployed and in terrible distress because they have no chance of finding employment.

There is a great demand for repatriation, but even this is impossible, because the boats sailing to Europe accept only a very limited number of repatriated at a reduced rate. Many have not enough funds even to pay the minimum charge for travelling expenses, and their situation is absolutely hopeles. To make matters worse every boat lands new immigrants, adding to the terrible distress of the Jewish population.

Under these circumstances, the Hias says, it is imperative to discourage any further Jewish emigration to Cuba.
