The death of Vice-chairman D. Van Rees of the Mandates Commission of the League of Nations was announced today at a session of the commission by Marquis A. Theodoli, chairman of the body. The Dutch statesman, who was seventy-one years old, died at Montreaux, Switzerland.
Marquis Theodoli paid a warm tribute to Mynheer Van Rees, outlining his career as a Dutch civil servant in the East Indies, where he was vice-governor until 1914, when he retired.
“He always considered Palestine questions with a warm heart and a keen intellect,” Marquis Theodoli stated.
Mynheer Van Rees was known to be very friendly to the Zionist cause and settlement of Jews on the land there. In the sessions of the Mandates Commission, the Dutch representative frequently displayed his deep interest in Palestine problems, severely cross-examining British representatives who delivered the mandatory report and fighting always for greater recognition of the Jews in Palestine.”
