A proposal that Jewish and Austrian experts meet next month to consider Jewish suggestions for extending legislation for restitution for individual victims of Nazism was made here today by Chancellor Julius Raab following a meeting of the Austrian Cabinet. However, under this schedule Parliament cannot consider draft legislation in this field before October.
This development has led to a slightly more optimistic attitude among informed circles here and it is expected that the members of the Jewish delegation will recommend that the Jewish Claims Committee re-open talks with the Austrian Government in June This recommendation, it is anticipated will be made at a meeting of the claims committee in Paris May 22.
The four-member Jewish delegation has been meeting with Austrian government leaders and officials during the past week, but thus far these consultations have not led to concrete results.
