Foreign Minister Golda Meir today expressed regret over the fact that the Bulgarian Government had not jet settled the claims of the victims who lost their lives in the El Al aircraft shot down over Bulgaria in July 1955. Mrs. Meir was replying to a question in the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, as to what steps the Government planned for obtaining redress over the incident.
The Foreign Minister expressed the hope that Bulgaria will show readiness to settle the “distressing human episode” in the near future. Fifty-eight persons lost their lives when the El Al Constellation was shot down over Bulgaria on July 27, 1955. A week later, the Bulgarian authorities announced their intention of punishing those responsible and compensating the families of the victims.
