NEW YORK (Aug. 2)
The First Annual Summer Maccabiah involving teenagers from Jewish camps in the northeast United States is scheduled for Aug. 9-11 at the New Jersey ‘Y’ Camps, Lake Como, Pa., it was announced by the American Zionist Youth Foundation, which is sponsoring the Maccabiah. This Jewish Olympics will bring together campers representing a wide spectrum of Jewish institutions. It will have equal representation from both the Zionist movement camps and private and public Jewish camps in the area.
The Maccabiah is designed to provide the participating campers a unique educational experience by giving each camp the opportunity to learn about the others and thus help gain a better understanding of what the Jewish world encompasses. The program itself is highlighted by an opening ceremony which will include a memorial commemoration for the 11 slain Israeli athletes of the Munich Olympics. During the three days, the campers will be involved in a myriad of activities including sports, cultural events, discussion groups, and entertainment.
The camps participating are: Betar, Cejwin, Ein Harod, JYC.Camps, Philadelphia, Massad B, Moshava, Na’aleh, New Jersey Y, Pembroke, Pinemere, Shomria and Sprout Lake.
