WASHINGTON (JTA) — A Jewish woman is being discussed as a possible replacement for U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter.
Elena Kagan, who was confirmed as solicitor general in March but has not yet argued a case before the Supreme Court, is considered a candidate for the slot that will open on the high court after the expected retirement of Souter in June. Kagan is a former dean of the Harvard Law School, and she was a lawyer and policy adviser in the Clinton adminstration.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the first Jewish woman to be named to the Supreme Court, by President Bill Clinton in 1993.
