JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel’s Cabinet approved a five-year plan to upgrade the Western Wall Plaza.
During a special meeting on Tuesday, the Cabinet also approved several decisions “to strengthen the city of Jerusalem and prepare for the 50th anniversary of its unification,” according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Among the plans approved are the continuing development of the Western Wall Plaza and its tunnels, the preservation of archaeological finds, upgrading transportation infrastructure, and expanding educational activities for students and soldiers.
A full plan will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval in two weeks, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Cabinet also decided to allocate structures in Jerusalem for cultural and recreational use.
A plan to further the economic development of Jerusalem through 2020 also will be budgeted beginning in 2016.
A ministerial committee also has been established in order to prepare for the 50th anniversary of the unification of the city in 2017. The committee has been charged with formulating a plan that will include events and programs in education, tourism, culture and sports, with emphasis on the 2017 Maccabiah Games.
