More than 200,000 people in Israel raw now living at below-subsistence level and deriving inadequate incomes through social assistance and insurance allowances or relief work, Dr. Israel Katz, director of the Hebrew University’s Paul Baerwald School of Social Work, declared here today.
Dr. Katz, who addressed the ceremonies at which 60 graduates of the school were awarded degrees, called on the Israel Government to bridge the growing economic and cultural gaps between the different sections of the population and to halt the present trend of imposing great responsibilities on social workers without providing the necessary conditions under which they could effectively conduct their work.
Dr. Eliahu Elath, president of the university, announced that an external course of professional studies will be introduced at the Baerwald School during the coming academic year for directors of Jewish communities in Europe.
