— Rabbi Bernard Twersky, for many years the public relations director of the Rabbinical Council of America, an Orthodox rabbinic body, died Dec. 31 after a long illness. He was 67. Funeral services were held here last Thursday. He was buried last Friday in the Rabbinical Council of America cemetery in Israel.
Born in Lublin, Poland, he came to the United States at an early age. He was a longtime member of the executive board of the Rabbinical Council of America and was founder of its quarterly “Tradition.” He was also secretary treasurer of the Council’s Beth Din of America.
Rabbi Sol Roth, president of the Rabbinical Council, said Twersky “was the spokesman par excellence for the newly-emerging modern Orthodox community in the United States. He was a driving force in bringing to public notice the new synthesis that was being created between traditional Orthodoxy and modern American life. The scion of noble Hasidic forebears, and remaining dedicated to his heritage, he was nevertheless able to articulate Orthodox Jewish values in a new, modern and, at times, hostile environment.”
